Cyanoacrylate Adhesives
Cyanoacrylate adhesives, commonly known as “super-glues” or “instant glues”, are the a family of fast-acting and strong adhesives that cures rapidly upon exposure to moisture like the moisture on the air or on the surfaces of parts to be bonded. They have various usage areas such as industries, household appliances, medical, and DIY etc.
Properties of Cyanoacrylate Adhesives
Cyanoacrylate adhesives are mostly known for their fast-curing, strong bonding, and versatile usage properties. They are generally colorless, constitutes of one part, and can be cured in room temperature upon exposure to moisture in air or on the surfaces of parts to be bonded. Their viscosities differ from water-thin liquid to thixotropic gels.
Moreover, when cyanoacrylate adhesives get cured, other than creating high strength and high durability bonds, they also create bonds which are resistant against water, oil, and many aggressive chemicals.
However, cyanoacrylate adhesives are not recommended to be used in areas where they will be placed under conditions of constant motion where high temperatures are present. Also, some special surface preparation chemicals may be required to employ cyanoacrylate adhesives on parts made from hard to bond substrates like;
- Acetal
- Polyethylene
- PTFE
- Polypropylene
- Polyurethane
etc.
It is important to use cyanoacrylate adhesives in well-ventilated rooms due to the possible fumes which may occur during the application of adhesives because these fumes can be harmful to human if inhaled in large quantities.
Materials
Cyanoacrylates adhesives can be used with various substrates including;
- Aluminum,
- Stainless Steel,
- Glass,
- PET,
- ABS,
- PVC,
- Nylon,
- PPSU,
- PSU,
- Plastic,
- Wood,
- Ceramic,
- Rubber,
and many more…
While they can be used on rubber and certain plastics, these substrates may react with the cyanoacrylate adhesives which can weaken the bond. Also, the fumes which may came from these applications can be harmful to humans if inhaled in large quantities hence it is recommended to use cyanoacrylates with certain plastics and rubber in a well-ventilated room.
Industries
Due to their properties like;
- High temperature resistance,
- Fast-curing speed,
- High strength and high durability bonding,
- Availability in various viscosities,
- Impact resistance
- Optically clear,
- Electrically insulative,
and so on, the cyanoacrylate adhesives can be used in a variety of application in different industries such as;
- Automotive Subassemblies
- Aerospace Components
- Musical Instruments
- Appliance Part Assembly
- Disposable Medical Device Application
- Electrical & Electronics
- Woodworking & Construction
- Household Repairs
- Cosmetics
- Agricultural Machinery
- Plastic & Rubber Manufacturing
and many more…
Benefits of Cyanoacrylate Adhesives
Cyanoacrylate adhesives are preferred in aforementioned industries because of their;
- Non-flammable,
- Rapid cure,
- High temperature resistant
properties. They can also be used for bonding wide range of similar and dissimilar substrates including various metals, certain plastics, ceramic, wood etc. Moreover, their ease of use makes them an excellent choice for automated systems.
