What Is Epoxy Adhesive

Adhesive for Glass

Adhesive for Glass

From construction industry (windows, doors, balconies, staircases etc.) to automotive industry (windshields, sunroofs etc.), from electronics industry (display panels, touchscreen assemblies etc.) to arts and crafts (glass cups, sculptures, vases, furnitures etc.) glass is a material which plays a constant role in our daily lives. While it is possible to join glass parts together through various applications, there are many benefits of using adhesive for glass bonding processes.

Benefits of Using Adhesives

There are many benefits of using adhesive for glass bonding applications:

  • Some clear adhesives offer an invisible bonding line which makes the product more visually appealing.
  • Mechanical fixing like drilling holes can create extra weak areas on the glass’ surface where the stress often will be concentrated on. Whereas using adhesives prevent these extra stress points hence makes the whole product more durable.
  • Using adhesives to bond two separate parts is much faster than using mechanical fasteners.
  • Using structural adhesives create an inseparable object at the end of bonding process.

Preparation

Before using the adhesive on glass, it is important to clean the surface of the glass with acetone or isopropanol. This way any residue left on the surface of the glass due to handling or other reasons will be wiped away and the bonding process will occur smoothly.

Adhesive Selection

There are plenty of adhesives which can bond glass with glass and many other materials.

What to Pay Attention To

When selecting the adhesive for glass bonding application, there are certain points to consider before making the ultimate decision:

  • Does the color of the glue is important? If the adhesive IS NOT clear, then the bonding line may be seen through the glass.
  • Will the application be on horizontal or vertical surface? Low viscosity glues will drip on vertical applications hence glues with higher viscosities should be chosen for vertical applications.
  • How long should it take to cure? Different glass glues cure in different speeds.
  • What will be the environmental conditions that the bonded object will be subjected to?
  • Is the special refractive index of the glue important? Special refractive index of the glue is important for lens bonding applications.

Adhesive Types

  • UV Adhesives: UV adhesives offer the best optical clarity and good Moreover, they get cured under seconds and does not require mixing.
  • Silicone Adhesive: They are an excellent choice for bonding glass with metal. Moreover, they are generally flexible and water resistant. Silicone adhesives get cured from outside towards inside.
  • Structural Acrylic Adhesives: Structural Adhesives provide improved adhesion and good durability.
  • Epoxy Adhesives: Epoxy adhesives provide a good resistance against environmental conditions.
