Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) are the type of vehicles which are powered by electric motors instead of internal combustion engines (ICEs) that run on fossil fuels. These electric motors are powered by rechargeable batteries and have almost zero emission.

A Brief History

Although electric vehicles have been around for more than a century, they are just becoming increasingly popular nowadays due to their environmental benefits and the advancement in technology.

The actual history of electric vehicles starts back in early 1800s with experiments on electric-powered carriages, but the first practical electric vehicle was developed in late 19th century. In 1890s, electric vehicles started to gain more popularity because they were quiet, clean, and easier to operate unlike fossil fuel powered vehicles which were noisy, dirty, and unreliable. However, this popularity of electric vehicles was short-lived because gasoline powered vehicles became more reliable and more affordable by everyone.

Why Electric Vehicles

Nowadays, electric vehicles are regaining popularity due to;

  • Environmental Benefits: Electric vehicles have a lower carbon footprint than gasoline fueled vehicles because EVs emit fewer greenhouse gases which is one of the main reasons for climate change.
  • Cost Saving: Generally, EVs require less maintenance and have lower fuel costs compared to ICEs.
  • Performance & Efficiency: EVs have higher energy efficiency and have smoother acceleration.
  • Innovation & Technology: Electric vehicles are on their way to becoming the future of automotive technology with the continuous advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructures.

and so on…

Advantages

Some of the advantages that electric vehicles are;

  • Lower Operating Costs: EVs require less maintenance and electricity is cheaper than gasoline.
  • Environmental Benefits: EVs can help reduce air pollution due to their zero greenhouse gases emission. Moreover, EVs are much quieter than fossil-fuel powered vehicles.
  • Performance: EVs are generally faster and have smoother acceleration/deceleration.
  • Convenience: EVs can be charged through the comfort of the user’s house.

However, there are also some disadvantages of electric vehicles…

Disadvantages

Some of the disadvantages of electric vehicles are;

  • Limited Driving Range: EVs have generally shorter driving distance which may create a problem for traveling long distances.
  • Longer Recharge Time: Depending on the charging speed, EVs can take up to several hours to be completely charged.
  • Higher Upfront Costs: EVs are generally more expensive due to the costs of batteries and other electrical components.
  • Battery Disposal & Recycling: EVs batteries have limited lifespan, that’s why when these batteries reach the end of their lifecycle, they need to be recycled which may be an expensive process and not be available everywhere.

How Do They Work

One of the key components of electric vehicles is batteries. These batteries are used to power up the vehicle. The batteries of electric vehicles are often made of many small cells which are linked together to create a larger and bigger battery pack. The size and the capacity of these battery packs varies from model to model in electric vehicles. These battery packs are connected to electric motors. Electric motors are responsible for converting the electrical energy stored in batteries to mechanical energy which eventually powers the vehicle.
